Naranjo, Bernice – Clay Bear with Bear Paw Designs

Bernice Naranjo is known for her distinctive etched pottery.  She is married to Tito Naranjo and is a sister-in-law to Dolly Naranjo, Jody Folwell, and Michael Naranjo.  She is the mother of Dusty Naranjo and Caroline Elliot and the grandmother of Johnathan Naranjo. This bear is coil-built and the back is fully polished.   It was fired a dark brown coloration.  On each side is a bear paw etched into the clay.  It is signed on the bottom, “Bernice Naranjo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Bernice Suazo Naranjo is originally from Taos Pueblo and is married to Tito Naranjo. She is a sister-in-law of Jody Folwell and Nora Naranjo-Morse. She is also the mother of Caroline Elliot, Dusty Naranjo and the grandmother of Johnathan Naranjo. She has won numerous awards for her incised pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Market.  She signs her work with a hallmark which represents her name in Tiwa, meaning "Stripe Rock".
