Sanchez, Russell – Red and Brown Jar with Copper Leafing (2005)

3.5"w x 4"h

$ 1,200.00

Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is perfectly coil-built, stone polished, and etched with designs.  This jar has a round shoulder and sloping side.  The neck is polished dark brown, and the base is polished red.  Separating the two are two rows of copper leafing.  On either side of the copper leafing are three inset bands of shell hei-shi beads.  The jar is simple but it has a striking focus on color and form.  It is signed on the bottom with Russell’s kayak hallmark.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

“I’m a traditionalist all the way through.  Innovation is part of our tradition. You use the same materials and tools that you have, and the same design elements, and the Clay Mother will come through you for what she wants you to do,” he explains. “Instead of doing the same cloud pattern or serpent pattern, you take that and make it your own. So, in fact, everything I’m doing is old, but new.”  Russell Sanchez, Southwest Art Magazine
