Herrera, Rosita de – Bowl with Carved Sun and Mesa Design (1970s)

Rosita de Herrera is a daughter of noted Ohkay Owingeh potter Tomasita Montoya and a sister of Dominguita Sisneros. This bowl is coil built and it is polished a deep red coloration on the rim and base.  Around the body of the bowl, it is deeply carved with a terraced mesa design.  As the bowl is turned, there is an incised sun design slipped in white and outlined in red clay.   It is a striking combination of two different technicuqes.  All the colors in the designs are from red and white clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom, “Rosita de Herrera”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is from the 1970s.
