Nolan Youvella was a son of noted potters Iris Nampeyo and Wallace Youvella.  He was known for his relief-carved pottery.  This jar has a round shoulder and extended neck.  The rim of the neck is carved is a step or “kiva step” pattern. Around the top of the shoulder is a carved scene with a corn plant, a kiva with a ladder, and adobe structural buildings.  The background area is incised with vertical lines.  Below the shoulder are step and cloud patterns. The remainder of the jar is fully polished.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Nolan Y.  Nampeyo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
