Madeline Naranjo creates beautifully carved and polished pottery.  Each piece is pinch-built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired.  She is one of the few Santa Clara potters who create pinch pottery instead of coil-built vessels.  This jar is one of her larger pieces.  The jar is entitled “Bears and Water Serpents”. The neck and base of the jar are fully polished.  Around the neck is an avanyu that is matte.  There is an another avanyu near the base.  Around the center of the jar are six bears that alternate polished and matte.  In front of each bear is a step mesa and where the bears meet is a kiva step design.  Madeline’s matte areas are sanded and perfectly smooth so that there are no indentations or areas where the matte might make a shadow.  Her designs are always innovative and beautifully executed.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Madeline Naranjo”

Madeline Naranjo is a granddaughter of Madeline Naranjo. She has known for her deeply carved pottery, which is thin-walled and contrasts matte and polished areas to accentuate the designs.  Each piece is a coil or pinch-built, carved, and stone polished.  They are traditionally fired outdoors to create the black coloration.
