Sue Tapia (b. 1945) is originally from Laguna Pueblo and was married to noted potter Tom Tapia. They made pottery together, along with Sue making her own individual pieces. This jar is coil-built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. The jar has a round body and short neck. The neck and base are fully polished red. The center section is inspired by San Juan Potsuwi’i designs. There are rain and mountain designs that are carved into the clay and slipped with mica. The jar was fired red and the contrasting coloration of the deep polished red and the micaceous red is visually striking. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sue Tapia”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
