Manygoats, Betty – Jar with Navajo Scene, Sheep, Hogan, and Handles (1980s)

7"w x 7.5"h

$ 400.00

This is a spectacular early jar by Betty Manygoats.  She is known for distinctive Dine (Navajo) pottery with a “folk art” feel to the designs. While she is known for her pieces with horned lizards, this is one of the few with a Navajo scene in relief. First, the jar itself is thin-walled with an elegant shape. The body is round with an elonganted neck.  There are two handles, each with incised “bead” designs.  The side of the jar have scenes in relief.  One side has a hogan with a cart.  The opposite side has a shepardess with give sheep and a dog. The tighness of the design is one that is seen in her early relief designs.  The jar was fired to a dark brown coloraiton. The painted after the firing.  After the firing, it was covered in pinon-pitch.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “BM.”  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  This is one of those few pieces that reflect on the creativity and quality of Betty’s pottery in the 1980s!
