Aguilar, Alfred – Large Bowl with Carved Avanyu

6"w x 4.5"h

$ 300.00

Alfred Aguilar (b. 1933) is a son of noted potters, Rosalie & Joe Aguilar.  His sister, Florence Browning, was also a well-known potter.  Alfred is known for his carved and painted pottery.  This is a larger piece of his work with a carved avanyu around the neck of the piece.  It is interesting how he carved the design, as it has carved away most of the clay area so that only the avanyu (water serpent) remains!   The avanyu is polished while the rest is matte.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Alfred Aguilar”.  The last photo is the bowl in front of a carved plate by Rosalie and Joe Aguilar.  I think it is an interesting comparison of the two similar styles of carving.
