Aguilar, Rosalie & Joe – Carved Red Jar with Swirling Clouds and Rain (1930s)

6.5"w x 7"h

$ 700.00

Rosalie and Joe Aguilar created some exceptional pottery throughout their time working together.  In the 1930’s, they began to make carved pottery.  This has a round shoulder and elongated neck.  The body of the jar is carved with a swirling cloud, lighting, and rain designs. The jar was polished a deep red coloration and the the background area is a matte red clay slip.  The style of the carving is known as “cameo carving”, which was typical at San Ildefonso in the 1930’s. The jar was traditionally fired, and as a result, part of it is a deep reddish brown (where it was high fired) and the rest is a deep red.  The color is stunning and almost feels intentional.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Rosalie + Joe” on the bottom in the clay.
