Aguino, Diego – Turtle with Flute Player Design (1990s)
Diego Aguino was a son of noted potter Martina Aguino. After she passed away in 1997, he began making pieces on his own that are both polished and etched. This is a figurative clay turtle with the back polished. The body of the turtle is slipped with mica. The back is polished red. There is a flute player etched into the clay as the design. The background area surrounding the designs has been more deeply stippled. The piece was traditionally fired. The piece is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. The jar is signed, “Soe-Khuwa”, which is Diego’s name in Tewa.
