Aragon, Rachel – Large Water Jar with Tularosa Swirls (1980s)

10.75"w x 9.5"h

$ 1,400.00

Rachel Aragon was one of the great traditional Acoma potters.  This water jar is indicative of the influence of her pottery and the continuation of traditional designs and forms. The jar is the traditional water jar or “olla”. The high shoulder and sloping short neck are part of this form. The top has six of the Tularosa swirls.  They are each filled in with thin lines. Below the shoulder are six more sections with Tularosa swirls. This is one of the more complex designs from Rachel with a flowing and tightly painted design.  The bottom of the jar is indented in the traditional manner when the pots were made to be worn on the head to carry water!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Rachel Aragon”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
