This is the largest jar Daniel Begay has made to date.  The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The piece has a square shape and each side has a heartline bear and water designs.  It is creative use of classic designs.  Each section is deeply carved and areas are stone polished to a high shine and create a striking contrast of matte and polished surfaces on this jar.  The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”.

Daniel Begay

Daniel T. Begay learned to make pottery from his father, Harrison Begay Jr., and his mother, Marie John. Daniel grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo and is Diné, which inspired him to combine the two cultures and traditions in his pottery. Each piece is coil-built, deeply carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. Daniel has a Master’s in Business Administration. He is married to Melodie and has three daughters, Violet, Ayani, and Kwynn. He signs his work “Daniel B.” and adds the year the pot was made.
