Begay, Daniel – 8″ WIde Bowl Carved Avanyu with Water and Star Designs

8"w x 7.75"h

$ 3,000.00

This is a large bowl by Daniel Begay.  The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The bowl has a low shoulder and straight sides. The rim and base are fully polished.  The neck of the jar has an avanyu (water serpent) that encircles the piece.  It is deeply carved and matte. Below the avanyu are waterfalls, waves and stars. Each section is deeply carved and contrasts various round swirling designs as if the avanyu is gliding through the water!  It is a visually striking and creative piece that gives voice to a classic Santa Clara story.  Areas are stone polished to a high shine and create a striking contrast of matte and polished surfaces on this jar.  The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”.
