This is a large contemporary square jar by Daniel Begay.  The jar is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. It is square in shape and carved on all four sides.  The piece is entitled, “Learning More about Each Other”.  There are turtles on one side, then clouds, rain, and water designs on the other four.  Each design is deeply carved and a combination of both polished and matte designs.  What makes Daniel’s square pieces so extraordinary is how the imagery is not just carved in four “panels”.  He takes the time to extend the designs ACROSS the corners, which is both time-consuming and more difficult. However, the results are spectacular with imagery that flows across the angular surfaces. It’s not just the imagery but the subtle flow of the polished and matte surfaces that are so creative in his work!   Daniel’s combination of both thin and thicker lines enhances the imagery.  His carving style has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay.
