Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery.  This jar with a round body and a turned-out rim. The neck of the jar is fully polished.  There are large turtles on each side.  They are deeply carved into the clay and each has a different design on the back for their shell. The heads are matte.  The area separating them have carved and polished stars surrounded by carved designs in matte.  It is a complex piece for the size!  The highly stone polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.    The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’00”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
