This is a creatively designed jar by Harrison Begay, Jr..  He has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery.  This jar has tall sides and it is fully carved.  The main design is a large dragonfly.  The dragonfly is fully polished and the wings have dots cut into the clay.  There is another small dragonfly near the base of the jar next to the waterfall.  The dragonfly is often considered the “Prayer Messenger”.  The remainder of the jar has cloud and wind geometrics in sections that are both polished and matte.  There is also one tiny carved and polished flower!   The jar was traditionally fired to a deep, glossy black coloration!  Stunning!  It is a powerfully designed jar with strong, thoughtful imagery.  All the designs are both polished and matte.  The highly stone-polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.    The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’23”.
