Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery.  This is one of his few red-fired pieces. The jar has a high shoulder and a short neck.  There is a heartline bear carved and polished on one side.  There are clouds, a waterfall, and wind designs, as the jar is turned.  The piece is striking in the depth of carving and the highly polished surface. All the designs are either polished or matte.  The highly stone-polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar was fired a rich red coloration.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’23”.
