Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery. This is one of his few red-fired pieces. The jar has a high shoulder and short neck. There is a hummingbird and flower. The hummingbird is fully polished while the flower is matte. As the jar is turned there are cloud designs. The opposite side has carved feathers and a dragonfly. They are tightly carved and highly polished. Again, as the jar is turned there are cloud designs, both polished and matte. The highly stone-polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. The jar was fired a rich red coloration. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’23”.
