Blue Corn – Polychrome Carved Jar with Avanyu (1970s)

7"w x 6.25"h

$ 2,200.00

This jar is one of the few deep-carved polychrome pieces by Blue Corn.  Blue Corn began by making black-on-black pottery, but it is her polychrome potter for which she is the most famous.  This jar is coil-built, carved, polished, painted, and traditionally fired. There is an avanyu carved into the clay encircling the piece. The background area that is carved away is slipped with light tan clay and the avanyu is outlined in black. The remainder is highly polished off-white clay.  The jar was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Blue Corn”.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. “.
