Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of SaraFina Tafoya.  She was known for her classic style of carved and polished Santa Clara pottery.  This carved engagement basket is from the 1980s.  It is carved with a water serpent that encircles the entire piece. It is fully polished, including the braided clay handle!  It is always amazing that the handles don’t crack or break in the polishing or firing process.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Mary Cain”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
