Cain, Mary -Large Red Jar with Carved Avanyu (1980s)
Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of SaraFina Tafoya. She was known for her classic style carved and polished Santa Clara pottery. This jar is from the 1980s. It is carved with her classic water serpent which encircles the piece. As the jar is turned there are rain and lightning designs. It is an elegant shape with a low shoulder and straight neck that shows off the design. The jar is polished red and traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Cain”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Definitely a classic of her pottery style!
