Chavarria, Stella – Red Jar with Carved Avanyu
Stella Chavarria is a daughter of noted potter Teresita Naranjo and a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo. This is a classic piece of her pottery and one of her few red pieces. The jar has an avanyu (water serpent) as the design. Note how the designs have a similarity to the work of her mother with the flow of carving across the surface and the use of negative space from the base. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Stella Chavarria”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. While Stella makes very little pottery today her work continues to reflect Santa Clara pottery traditions.
