Chavarria, Stella – Red Water Jar with Carved Avanyu and Feathers

4"w x 6"h

$ 400.00

Stella Chavarria is a daughter of noted potter Teresita Naranjo and a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo. This is a classic piece of her pottery and one of her few red pieces.  The jar has an avanyu (water serpent) carved around the body of the piece.  Around the neck are 15 deeply carved feathers.  They extend down from the top of the neck, using the negative space.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Stella Chavarria”.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  While Stella makes very little pottery today her work continues to reflect Santa Clara pottery traditions.
