10"w x 8"deep x 8.5"h

$ 1,400.00

This is an intricately painted large canteen by Rose Chino Garcia. She was a daughter of noted potter Marie Z. Chino. This piece sits at an angle and has a round body, handles, and an elongated spout.  The front is painted with fine-line interlocking stars.  Near the top are two heartline deer and on the sides are two more deer with plant and rain designs.  The heartline deer are symbolic in Acoma pottery.  It was a design borrowed from Zuni pottery around 1910 and the heartline is said to represent life itself.   The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and the heartlines are a red clay slip. The canteen was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Rose Chino”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
