10.5"w x 8.25"h

$ 1,400.00

This is an iconic large water jar by Rose Chino Garcia. She was a daughter of noted potter Marie Z. Chino. This piece has a wide shoulder and short neck.  It is a classic Acoma water jar shape. The jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay.  The design is inspired by an Acoma water jar made in the 1890s that is in the School of American Research.  Rose used her own shape but kept the concept of the birds and deer in panels.  The top half of the jar has eight sections with Acoma birds and flowers.  Below the shoulder are eight sections with heartline deer and rain clouds.  It is a complex series of designs and note how the panels are each offset from the one below.  The heartline deer imagery is a classic to both Acoma and Zuni pottery, with the heartline signifying the center, spirit, or, “heart” of the animal.  This large jar is very thin-walled and it was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Rose Chino”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
