Clashin, Debbie – “Moth and Mesa” Wide Shoulder Jar

9.5"w x 5"h

$ 1,500.00

This is a classic wide-shoulder jar by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery. The jar has a wide shoulder and a short neck. The rim is slipped with a w deep burgundy-red colored clay. The top of the shoulder has two sections with the Chapella Family moth designs.  Did you know that Grace Chapella revived the moth or butterfly design from the ancient Sikyatki pottery and this design has been seen on the pottery of the Chapella family for over a century?  The designs on either side of the moth represent the Hopi mesas.  Separating the moth designs are Debbie’s stylized mesa patterns. The mesas are triangular designs with long lines representing the water or springs under the ground.  Below the shoulder are mulit-colored rainbow and rain designs. The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and two different colors of clay slip. The piece was traditionally fired to create the blushes across the surface of the jar.   It is signed on the bottom, “Debbie Clashin” and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
