This is a creative water jar by Lolita Concho. She is considered one of the Acoma revivalists in the 1960s-70s, along with Marie Z. Chino, Lucy Lewis, and Jessie Garcia. This piece is from the early 1970s, when she was among the first at Acoma to begin a revival of four and five-color jars. This jar is from 1983, and it is made from native Acoma clay. The jar has a sharp shoulder, an elongated neck, and a flaring rim. There is a raised, corrugated band around the top of the shoulder. Interestingly, it is unpainted. Why is that? Lolita Concho, as well as Lucy Lewis and Marie Z. Chino, all created “utilitarian” shapes at various times that were unpainted. They were meant to reflect on traditional forms that would have been used in the homes, but refined. This jar was traditionally fired so there are color variations on the surface. It is signed on the bottom, “L. Concho”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
