Coriz, Arthur & Hilda – Large Water Jar with 7 Birds and Flower Design (1990s)

14"w x 12"h

$ 1,200.00

This is a large water jar by Arthur and Hilda Coriz.  Hilda would coil build each piece and then they would be painted by Arthur. The painting was done with natural clay slips (white and red) and then wild spinach (black).  This jar has a high, sharp shoulder and a turned-out rim.  The neck of the jar has a cloud design and below that is a flower pattern.  Below the shoulder of the jar are seven sections, each with a different bird painted as the design.  The wild spinach is the plant used to paint the black.  The rim of the jar has a  “spirit line” or break in the painted design on the rim, which then extends down through the entire design.  This goes back to historic Kewa pottery when the artist would use the spirit line to release their spirit or connection from the vessel.  The lower section is polished red and note on the base that the initial coils of the jar are visible.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Arthur and Hilda Coriz”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
