Curran, Dolores – “Birds on Rainbows” Jar with Bear Lid

3"w x 3.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 1,200.00

This is a very detailed lidded polychrome jar by Dolores Curran.  She continues to create intricately incised and painted pottery.  She was inspired to create these red polychrome incised and painted by her husband, Alvin Curran.  He was known for his incised San Juan-style pottery in the late 1990s.  This jar has a storage jar shape with a high shoulder.  It’s a great shape as it provides a lot of surface area for design! Dolores said of this piece, “My designs are representing birds on rainbows with rain patterns next to the birds. Along the center is a step design followed by a feather bustle with stars etched out. Below are waves which represent water.” Dolores has carved the lid to fit tightly with a bear on top. The polished bear sits on a micaceous disc and cloud designs are on both sides of the lip. Dolores has polished the top and bottom of the jar a deep red.  All the colorations are from natural clay slips.  It is an extraordinary amount of time to create pieces intricate both in design and to use the various clay additions.   The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dolores Curran”.
