Dolores Curran creates intricately incised and painted pottery.  She was inspired to create these red polychrome incised and painted by her husband, Alvin Curran.  He was known for his incised San Juan style pottery in the 1990’s.  This is one of her larger pieces and it is exceptional in its design!  The jar has a polished neck and base.  On the rim there are red-on-red lightning designs.  Around the neck are buff-on-red prayer feather and rain patterns.  Below the polished section is a carved avanyu which is matte and surrounded with a micaceous clay slip.  Around the shoulder are carved eagle feathers which are at an angle. It is the next lower section which is extraordinary!  There are old style avanyu carved into the clay and highlighted with red and white clay slips. She has then carved a deep channel into the jar.  Below the channel are water designs, as if the avanyu are swimming above the waves!  The base is then fully polished and there are simply two small buff-on-red dragonflies.  Amazing detail and imagery!  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay.
