Davis, Titus – Canteen with Plant Designs

Davis, Titus – Canteen with Plant Designs

Titus Davis is the son of noted potter Darla Davis and a brother-in-law of Eric Lewis.  He creates hand-built pottery and is known for his more contemporary style.  However, this is one of his traditional Acoma canteens. The canteen has a plant pattern painted in red-on-white on one side with native clay slips.  It is charming with the handles and the taller shape.  It’s great to see a potter who can create both traditional and contemporary styles in his pottery.  It is signed on the bottom.

Titus Davis

Titus Davis produces hand-built and painted traditional Acoma pottery with a contemporary flair of fine-line precision. He adds flowing fluid lines to a near perfect geometric background producing the third dimension in depth to the painting. Titus Davis was introduced into pottery making by his Mother, Darla Davis, and his grandmother is Rachel James. He has a sister named Alicia Chino and his brother-in-law with Acoma potter Eric Lewis. Titus offers a new contemporary and distinctive style to Acoma designs.  He is known for his broad curved lines, set against a classic background of Acoma white clay, with geometric and precise black line patterns. The different concentric lines of his pottery flow in several directions, but each meets perfectly on the 360-degree radius.
