This piece by Preston Duwyenie is made from white Hopi clay. The shape is inspired by early Sikyatki pottery with wide, low shoulders. The body of the piece is fully polished with a matte area near the top. The polished area is meant to represent the earth, the raised area the waters, and the higher matte areas the land and mountains. Preston says, “the earth is in balance” when all three are connected. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay with Preston’s hallmark which is a woman carrying a child.
