Early, Max – Turkey Canteen (1994)

4.5"w x 4"h x 3.5" deep

$ 350.00

Max Early is one of the few traditional potters working today at Laguna Pueblo.  His work combines traditional forms with a blend of contemporary and traditional designs.  This canteen has a turkey as the design. The head of the turkey extends outward and the tail feathers are painted against the front of the canteen.  Of course, Max is Turkey Clan, so it seems like an appropriate design for his work!  The remainder is slipped white and painted with red clay slip on the rim and handles.  The canteen was traditionally fired, which adds to the overall difficulty of the piece.  It is signed, “Max Early” on the back and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is certainly exciting to see a potter who is inspired by traditional shapes and designs and yet has the artistry to create his own distinctive variation!
