Foley, Benina – Melon Jar with 32 Melon Ribs and Lid (1999) Ribbon

Benina Foley is a daughter of noted potter Laura Gachupin.  She is a niece of  Maxine Toya and learned to make pottery from her mother. This is a large melon jar with 32 carved swirling melon ribs. Each rib is individually carved and stone polished. The neck of the jar is stone polished.  The lid of the jar is polished tan.  The neck of the jar is polished red, while the remainder is polished tan, the natural color of the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Benina Foley”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It has a Blue Ribbon from the 1999 Santa Fe Indian Market.  One of the judges was Harry Fonseca!
