Folwell, Jody – 14″ Tall Asymmetric Rim Jar with Four Lizards in Relief (1980s)

9"w x 14"h

$ 5,500.00

Jody Folwell is known for her creative pottery shapes and designs.  This very large jar is one of her classic styles with the asymmetrical rim, which is polished and etched.  However, the body of the piece is so dramatic, with lizards lying “in relief” on the sides of the jar.  The vessel itself is carved deeply into the clay around the lizards, while they are rag-polished for a light shine.  The contrast of polished and matte surfaces, along with the various techniques of carving, polishing, and etching, makes this a very complicated vessel.  The one thing you can’t see in the photos is the construction of this piece.  It is so perfectly made with thin walls and balanced from top to bottom.  It is amazing for a jar this large to be so perfectly built, but not so uncommon for Jody, who is an amazing potter.  It is signed on the bottom, “Jody”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  The jar includes a copy of the new book on Jody Fowell.
