Folwell, Jody – Brown Jar with Asymmetric Rim, Bird and “Xs” (1990s)

Jody Folwell is known for her creative pottery shapes and designs.  This jar is one of her classic shapes with a round shoulder and an asymmetric rim.  This piece is fully polished and traditionally fired to a dark brown coloration.  This piece is from the 1990s.  There is a single bird along with etched clouds, rain, corn, and, of course, the famous “x’s”.  This imagery has become a signature of her pottery, as well as the entire Folwell family.  It is signed on the bottom, “Jody”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

To bring the whole piece together, I started thinking about how one needed to do a repetition of a background so it brought everything together with a design on the outside. I started thinking about what would work as a repetitive kind of design. I started looking at different designs, and I was looking at the huge cross that was right over the altar at one of the Catholic churches and I started playing around with that. All I did was turn it sideways, and then you have the X’s. Jody Folwell, Spoken Through Clay
