Folwell, Polly Rose – Jar with Mountain and Lightning Designs
Polly Rose Folwell is a daughter of Jody Folwell and a sister of Susan Folwell. She is known for use of classic designs on her traditional-inspired Santa Clara pottery. This jar is coil-built and thin-walled. It is fully polished and fired a coloration that ranged from red to nearly black. Did you know that while the pieces are traditionally fired, at the end of the firing instead of covering them with horse manure, the Folwells use cow manure so that the jar turns brownish-red and has more dramatic fire clouds. The jar has lightning designs above mountain patterns. In the center of the mountain designs are the tightly etched Folwell family “x’s”. They are a design associated with the Folwell family and represent stars. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Polly Rose”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
