Polly Rose Folwell is a daughter of Jody Folwell and a sister of Susan Folwell.  She is known for her use of classic designs on her traditional-inspired Santa Clara pottery. This new jar is coil-built and thin-walled.  It is fully polished and fired a coloration that ranges from red to nearly black.  Did you know that while the pieces are traditionally fired, at the end of the firing instead of covering them with horse manure, the Folwells use cow manure so that the jar turns brownish-red and has more dramatic fire clouds.  Below the shoulder, Polly has painted two bands of matte clay encircling the piece.  They are more to be felt than seen.  Polly said she since it was a water jar, it was a piece that should be held.  The matte bands remind the holder that the piece is clay and there is that textural feel of the “wet clay” on your hands when you hold the jar.  It is a wonderful combination of form and simplicity of creative and thoughtful design.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Polly Rose”.
