Folwell, Susan – “Adaptation” Wide Shoulder Jar

12"w x 3"h

$ 2,800.00

This wide-shoulder jar by Susan Folwell is extraordinary in both concept and design. The jar is entitled “Adaptation” and it is inspired by the E.I. Couse “Hunter and Deer” painting (See the last photo).  Susan says of this piece,

“This is an important piece for me.  Here, the hunter is looking at the deer but at the same time, he is surrounded by the modern world.  The cities are closing in on the open forest and land.  The pueblos reflecting into the sykscrappers.  I cut through the jar and then “stiched” it together with leather.  It is how we are holding the fast chaning world together.  The jar becomes a refelction of the vanishing of the ancient cultures.  Old gives way to new.”

The jar is coil-built and then cut through around the shoulder and sides. It is painted on the top with the hunters and deer, along with the pueblo and cityscapes.  The bottom is painted with circles of water.  The areas that are cut through are then “stitched’ together with leather. The color, motion, movement, and message are all stunning and cohesive on this jar.  It is signed on the bottom, “Susan Folwell”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
