Susan Folwell is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Beginning in 2017, Susan Folwell began a series of clay pieces inspired by and re-interpreting the Taos Society of Artists’ work from 1915-27. This is one of her clay “cell phone” tiles.  It is entitled, “Pottery Presenter”.  Susan says while he may be selling the pottery, it is more that he is presenting each piece as a work of art.  The design is inspired by the work of E.I Clouse, one of the Taos Society of Artists (see second to the last photo). The main figure is inspired by many of Couse’s paintings. Around him are a variety of pieces of pottery to be sold.  Susan notes that they are both modern and traditional pieces.  Of course, in the very front, are two pieces that are connected to her own recent series. There is the “Wonderbread” and the “Trout Can”.  She has also modified the back with her own cell phone “logo”.  Susan’s entire “Taos Light” series is based on a native artist re-interpreting the work of the mostly male and Anglo Taos Society of Artists.  The piece is signed and included a metal cell phone stand.

Susan says of this series:

“In 2020 I began working on a new sieres.  During this time when you can’t leave your house it is your “virtual vacation”.   Each clay tile is carved as a “cell phone” and then painted.  So far they are inspired by paintings by Buck Dunton, Carl Oscar Borg, E.I. Couse, and Burt Phillips.  I’ve also added my own “logo” to the back of the pieces.
