This an amazing set by Susan Folwell as part of her “Taos Light” series.  She is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Beginning in 2017, Susan Folwell began a series of clay pieces inspired by and re-interpreting the Taos Society of Artists’ work from 1915-27.  The group of pieces is entitled, “Spilled Reflections”.  Susan says she wanted to portray a can that has spilled in the woods.  The reflection in the “liquid” are the raccoons and aspen trees, all imagery from a Buck Dunton painting.  The colors and composition feel almost realistic in their brown-ish coloration of spilled liquid.  One can almost imagine that the reflected raccoon is the one that spilled the can! Susan says of Buck Dunton’s paintings, “Buck Dunton is one of my favorite of the Taos Artists.   Dunton was an outdoorsman and I wanted to create the idea of his work reflected into something realistic.”.   The beer “can” is made from clay and painted to look rusted.  The larger piece has the raccoons and aspen trees while the smaller sections are just the aspen trees.  It is a striking set that captures the work of Dunton with charm and a bit of humor.   The entire piece is set into a museum mount, creating both a sculptural appearance and the way to see all the piece at one time and as “one” object.
