This is a tall jar by Susan Folwell.  It is coil-built and has a creative shape that provides a lot of surface design.  In two sections, there are cameo-carved birds.  One side has two birds, and the other side has one bird.  The birds are carved at various levels into the clay and are surrounded by carved flowers!  The multi-layer carving is striking with the subtle shadows it creates.  The other two panels have incised feathers at the rim and incised circles.  There are additional birds that are simply painted with clay before firing!  Susan created subtle outlines of the birds and the feathers.  It is not just the visual but the texture of each bird that makes them so interesting. The piece was painted after firing.  It is signed, “Susan Folwell”.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
