Folwell, Susan – “Taos Village” Clay Cell Phone Tile (Victor Higgins)

5" x 9.5"

$ 1,000.00

Susan Folwell is one of the exciting innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Beginning in 2017, Susan Folwell began a series of clay pieces inspired by and re-interpreting the Taos Society of Artists’ work from 1915-27. This is one of her clay “cell phone” tiles.  It is entitled, “Taos Village”.  The design is inspired by the work of Victor Higgins, one of the Taos Society of Artists (see second to the last photo). The piece has a stylized view of Taos in an almost cubist manner.  She has also modified the back with her own cell phone “logo”.  Susan’s entire “Taos Light” series is based on a native artist re-interpreting the work of the mostly male and Anglo Taos Society of Artists.  The piece is signed and included a metal cell phone stand.

Susan says of this series:

“In 2020 I began working on a new sieres.  During this time when you can’t leave your house it is your “virtual vacation”.   Each clay tile is carved as a “cell phone” and then painted.  So far they are inspired by paintings by Buck Dunton, Carl Oscar Borg, E.I. Couse, and Burt Phillips.  I’ve also added my own “logo” to the back of the pieces.
