This bowl by Gloria Garcia is fully polished and fired black. The designs are etched into the clay.  There are two scenes with realistic bears and butterflies.  The butterflies are highlighted with red clay.  There are two sections with Mimbres-inspired bears.  Separating each section are bands with tiny bear paws!.  Gloria’s combination of polishing and etched designs is always striking.  This piece is signed on the bottom with her Tewa name “GoldenRod”.

Gloria Garcia

Gloria Garcia (b.1942) is the daughter of Petra Gutierrez and a sister of potters Minnie Vigil, Lois Gutierrez, and the mother of Jason Garcia. Gloria is known for her intricately incised miniature pottery. Gloria has won numerous awards for her pottery over the years at Santa Fe Indian Market and has pottery in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
