Garcia, Gloria “Golden Rod” – Large Red Bowl with Big Horn Sheep
Gloria Garcia is known for her miniature sgraffito pottery. She is a daughter of Petra Gutierrez and the sister of Lois Gutierrez, Minnie Vigil, and Thelma Talachy. This is one of her larger pieces. The bowl is highly polished and fired red. There are three bighorn sheep etched into the clay. They are each realistic in style. They are surrounded by plants and there are stylized birds in the sky. There is a rain design around the rim. The use of the negative space of the highly polished surface is perfect on this bowl to create space between and below the Big Horn Sheep. This piece is signed on the bottom with her Tewa name “GoldenRod”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
