Garcia, Sarah – Large Face Jar with Handle (1970s)

8"w x 7"h

$ 800.00

This is an exceptional piece by Sarah Garcia (1928-2015).  Sarah, along with Jessie Garcia, Lucy M. Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, was largely responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa designs on contemporary Acoma vessels.  This jar is thin-walled and tightly painted.  There is a face on the top and the area below is painted with a geometric lightning design.  The “face jars” are a style for which Sarah was famous.  This design is complex with contrasting black, white, and fine-line designs. The handle has three bands of clay and is painted with dragonflies.  It was traditionally fired outside so there are some color variations on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Sarah Garcia”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
