Garcia, Virginia – Water Jar with Gourd Indentions (1990s)

4.5"w x 6"h

$ 475.00

Virginia Garcia is a sister of noted potters Tina Garcia and Greg Garcia.  While she no longer makes pottery, much like her siblings, she was known for her traditional forms and creative firings.  This water jar has a round body, sharp shoulder, elongated neck with a turned out rim. The shoulder of the jar has nine gourd intentions.  This is the first piece by Virginia I have seen with the gourd design.  There is a degree of difficulty in this style of jar, as the circular areas are pushed into the clay. Then the entire piece has to be stone polished and the gourd area create additional surface area and angles.  The intentions are called “gourd” indetions, after the gourds used to smooth out the inside of a piece of pottery as it is being made.  The jar was fully polished and fired a glassy black. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, ‘Virginia Garcia”.
