Gasper, Pete & Dinah – Six Direction Fetish Bowl (1970s)
$ 1,500.00
Peter Gasper (1938-2011) and Dinah Gasper (b. 1944) are credited with being the first Zuni carvers to inlay heartlines into animals. Another innovation of theirs was to inlay small dots of silver into their pieces, giving a reflective quality to the inlaid dots. Dinah was a daughter of Teddy Weahkee and sister of Lena Boone. This is one of their few fetish bowls. The fetishes represent the six directions. There is a mother-of-pearl eagle on the top and a jet mole inside the bowl. There is a wolf, bear, badger, and mountain lion on the outside. The bowl itself is covered in crushed turquoise. There are also two leather medicine bundles inside the bowl. The piece was purchased in the 1970s. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Definitely a fascinating piece of history!
