Gonzales, Rayita – Bowl with Rain Designs (1920’s)

5.75"w x 2.75"h

$ 350.00

Rayita Gonzales was a sister of Louis  “Wo-Peen” Gonzales and Raymoncita Gonzales.  She did not make much pottery but it was mostly during the 1930s.  This is the 5th piece of her work that we have come across for the gallery and the first one that is painted instead of carved.  The bowl has a rain and cloud design painted on the surface.  The thin-line rain designs were a style seen in the late 1920s period of San Ildefonso pottery.  The bottom is also fully polished, which is an indication of an earlier piece.  The bowl is polished and traditionally fired black.  It is signed “Rayita” in the clay on the bottom.  It is in good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair, but light surface scratches which are not unexpected in its age.
