Gonzales, Rose – Large Red Jar with Carved Avanyu (1970’s)

6"w x 7.5"h

$ 1,400.00

This is an exceptional red water jar by Rose Gonzales.  She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted and carved pottery.  This jar is her signature shape and design. The high shoulder allows for space for her cameo style carving.  There is a water serpent (avanyu) carved into the shoulder of the jar.  Note the circle for the eye, which was how she carved her pieces.  The jar is highly polished and fired a deep red.  The neck extends upward in her classic style, but with just a slight turn out on the rim.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Rose” on the bottom in the clay.
